Tax Primer

How Taxes Work in the United States

A foundational guide to understanding the deductions on your paycheck stub

1. Federal Income Tax

The federal government taxes individual income progressively across statutory brackets (10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%). Taxable income is determined after subtracting the standard deduction or itemized deductions from adjusted gross earnings.

2. FICA Payroll Taxes

Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) taxes fund Social Security and Medicare. Employees pay 6.2% for Social Security (up to the annual wage ceiling) and 1.45% for Medicare (uncapped), matched dollar-for-dollar by employers.

3. State & Local Taxes

Most states levy their own income tax on earned wages. Systems range from graduated brackets (like California and New York) to flat percentage rates (like Illinois and Pennsylvania). Nine states impose no earned income tax at all.

Frequently Asked Tax Questions

Clear answers to common questions about payroll withholding, tax brackets, and take-home pay

Withholding is the estimated amount your employer deducts from each paycheck based on your Form W-4 and IRS withholding tables. Your actual tax liability is the exact amount you owe the IRS calculated when you file your Form 1040 annual tax return. If your cumulative withholding exceeded your liability, you receive a tax refund; if withholding was insufficient, you owe the difference.
