How It Works
The IRS classifies bonuses as supplemental wages. Most employers use the statutory flat percentage method, withholding federal income tax at a flat 22% (or 37% for bonuses over $1 million), plus 6.2% Social Security, 1.45% Medicare, and applicable state supplemental withholding.
Calculation Example
On a $10,000 performance bonus for a California resident: Federal withholding (22%) is $2,200, Social Security (6.2%) is $620, Medicare (1.45%) is $145, and state withholding (approx 6.6%) is $660. Total withholding is $3,625, and net bonus payout is $6,375.
Frequently Asked Questions
No! All income is treated the same at year-end on your tax return. Bonuses are merely subject to a standardized flat withholding rate (22%) on the paystub, which may make the deduction look higher initially.
