How It Works
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must receive overtime pay for all hours worked over 40 in a workweek at a rate not less than one and one-half times (1.5x) their regular rate of pay.
Calculation Example
An employee with a base wage of $28.00/hour who works 48 hours in a workweek earns: Regular pay: 40 hrs x $28.00 = $1,120.00. Overtime pay: 8 hrs x ($28.00 x 1.5 = $42.00) = $336.00. Total gross weekly earnings: $1,456.00, resulting in an effective rate of $30.33 per hour.
